University Commencement is a universitywide ceremony at which the president
of the university formally confers all undergraduate and graduate degrees
awarded throughout the past academic year. It is an exciting, festive,
and dramatic occasion, with student and faculty representatives from all
of Rutgers’ schools and colleges participating in academic regalia.
Actual diplomas are distributed to graduate degree candidates from several
Rutgers graduate schools (see Who Should Attend below). Honorary degrees
are awarded to several well-known and accomplished individuals, and a Commencement
Address by an invited speaker is always a highlight. All members of the Rutgers community are welcome and encouraged to attend.
University Commencement is a ceremony distinct from the individual school and
college convocations. In particular, it should not be confused with the Rutgers College (School of Arts and Sciences) Convocation, which takes place on Thursday, May 21, or the University College (School of Arts and Sciences) Convocation on Friday, May 22.
